about

Poetry Unit
Song Poem Project
2012

This week, you will be producing a poem of your own creation that uses several (or all) of the poetic devices and techniques we have discussed in class.

Day One: Today, you will come up with a topic about which you will write your poem. The topic should either be something well known to you, or something that you have very strong feelings about. This way, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to come up with things to say about your chosen topic.

Once I have approved your topic, you will then write down at least 5 things to say about your topic. This does not need to be done "poetically", as we will do that later. You will identify key words in each of your five things. From these key words, you will create a Word Band of words that mean the same, opposite, rhyme, etc. which will give you words from which to choose when you actually begin writing your poem.

Day Two-Three: Today you will begin writing the first draft of your poem. It will be about the topic you have chosen, and you should try to use the words and the five ideas you came up with yesterday. Your poem should be at least 16 lines in length, though you are free to make it longer. There will need to be a discernible rhyme scheme and meter, however; getting your ideas down in a poetic format should be the focus for today, then developed tomorrow. A first draft of your poem is due at the end of class Wednesday.

Day Four: Today you will fine tune the meter and rhyme scheme of your poem, as well as make use of opportunities to include alliteration, consonance, simile, metaphor, etc. into your poem. A second draft of your poem is due at the end of class today.

Day Five: For a test grade, you will complete a final draft of your poem in class today. The final draft will need to be in ink with all corrections, including spelling, made. Typing your poem would be ideal.
